Fur Rondy Grand Prix

Downtown Anchorage street racing, 1960–2009.

Held with the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous winter carnival, the Grand Prix was the club’s premier event for over 30 years. It started in 1960 as a three-day mid-week, moved to Saturday and Sunday in 1964, ran on Sand Lake ice after the Good Friday Quake, and returned to downtown streets in 1977 with snow berms as barriers. Guest drivers included Chris Cook, Elliot Forbes-Robinson, Dennis Aase, and Bob Bondurant. Budget, traffic, and politics ended it after 2009.

For a time it was the longest-running street race in North America, at one point surpassing the Long Beach Grand Prix.
